Planet Zoo 2 expands the original zoo-management formula in three visible directions: fully aquatic animals and aquariums, fully flying animals and aviaries, and customizable Wildlife Reserves beyond the zoo. It also introduces new building controls while retaining detailed zoo construction, animal welfare, guest management and familiar game modes.
That is the evidence-backed summary before release. It is too early to call every system better, count every returning animal or promise that old saves and downloadable content will transfer.
Planet Zoo 1 vs 2 at a glance

| Fully flying animals | No dedicated free-flight aviary system | Fully flying birds in custom aviaries made with barriers, poles and dynamic mesh | Confirmed new feature |
| Wildlife Reserves | Releasing an animal ends its visible zoo role | Eligible animals can enter customizable living reserves tied to conservation projects | Confirmed new feature |
| Construction | Piece-by-piece building, terrain tools, paths and scenery themes | Piece-by-piece building plus scaling, flexi-colour, easier pathing, foliage brushes and terrain brushes | Confirmed additions; quality needs testing |

The biggest difference is not just a larger animal list
The sequel adds habitat types that change how a zoo is planned.
Aquariums can be freshwater or saltwater and use filtration plus keeper access. Aviaries use support poles and a dynamic mesh cover rather than treating a flying animal as a ground-based habitat resident. See our separate aquarium guide and aviary guide for the confirmed construction details.
Wildlife Reserves create another layer beyond the guest-facing zoo. Frontier says players will meet requirements, release animals, rewild ecosystems, conduct research and manage an interconnected reserve network. The exact eligibility rules remain unpublished, so our Wildlife Reserves guide separates the confirmed loop from launch questions.
What appears to carry forward
Planet Zoo 2 is still built around the original game’s strongest pillars:
- individual animal needs and behaviours;
- detailed habitat and scenery construction;
- zoo finances, guests, education, shops and amenities;
- research and conservation;
- Career, Franchise and Sandbox play;
- player-created blueprints and community sharing.
The names may be familiar, but equal names do not guarantee equal rules. Frontier has confirmed animal trading with other players in Franchise mode, for example, but has not yet published a complete comparison of Franchise economies, shared progression or platform boundaries.
Building tools: confirmed upgrades, not a verdict
Frontier specifically names object scaling, flexi-colour controls, easier pathing, and new foliage and terrain brushes. These could reduce repetitive construction work and make broad landscape edits faster.
However, “easier” is an official product description, not an independent usability result. At launch we will test path placement, snapping, elevation changes, undo behaviour, object scaling limits and controller parity before rating the tools.
What the current animal count does not prove
Our confirmed animals database contains 52 live official Zoopedia records as checked on July 30, 2026. Frontier’s data schedules more reveals, so 52 is a dated snapshot—not the final launch roster.
It also cannot answer whether every original animal or DLC species returns. A familiar animal being absent from today’s Zoopedia is not proof that it was cut.
Do Planet Zoo 1 saves or DLC transfer to Planet Zoo 2?
No official source checked for this guide confirms any of the following:
- importing an original Planet Zoo save;
- transferring original-game DLC ownership;
- automatically carrying over Steam Workshop items;
- converting an original blueprint into the sequel;
- receiving a discount because you own the first game.
Treat all five as unconfirmed, not as confirmed “no” answers. The sequel can preserve familiar themes and tools without supporting file-level compatibility.
Which game should you choose?
- Choose the original now if you want a mature game with years of updates and a large DLC catalogue, and its current platform edition fits your needs.
- Watch Planet Zoo 2 if fully aquatic animals, free-flying birds, reserves or the new construction controls are central to your plans.
- Wait for launch testing if your decision depends on performance, pathing quality, controller parity, save transfer or the final animal roster.
Planet Zoo 2 releases on October 13, 2026. Our comparison will change from “confirmed differences” to a tested comparison after the launch build is available.
