Wildlife Reserves are playable in Planet Zoo 2, which launched October 13, 2026. Frontier describes a connected network of zoos and reserves: complete conservation work, release eligible animals, then observe and research living ecosystems. If a release group is blocked, the useful first step is to record which screen says it is blocked and the exact requirement shown there. A zoo-side release action and a reserve-side group requirement may be different checks.
Choose the symptom: release crash or Resume error · animal missing from storage · visible animal or release group rejected.
Release crash or Resume connection error? Check the version first
Update 1.0.8: lost release-group animals and loading failures
Check your installed build before following an older workaround. Frontier’s October 29 Update 1.0.8 notes distinguish these cases:
- Animals lost during a Franchise reserve release: Frontier says it fixed a loss triggered by a crash or disconnection during release. It says identified affected players will automatically receive new animals in their reserves. This is not a promise to restore the original individuals or compensate every missing animal.
- A zoo fails to load: the notes describe two loading-crash fixes and advise players affected by those failures to try the save again. If it still fails, use the Issue Tracker and provide the requested save evidence. Keep the original save; this is not an instruction to delete or overwrite it.
- Choosing a save to overwrite: Frontier changed the Save Menu to separate saves for the current location and highlight the loaded save. Check the location and selected save before confirming; the change does not guarantee recovery of a previously overwritten file.
A release group rejected by an eligibility requirement is a different problem; use the zoo-side and reserve-side checks below. The 1.0.8 notes do not establish that every Resume, connection or reserve failure is resolved.
Patch source checked October 30, 2026 (JST). We have not independently tested save recovery, compensation or installation on each platform.
Earlier versions: the 1.0.6 release crash and Steam 1.0.7 Resume error
The October 23 Update 1.0.6 notes list a fix for the crash linked to releasing animals into Franchise Wildlife Reserves. This supersedes the October 20 notice that described the fix as still being tested. A released fix is not proof that every save or release failure is resolved.
A separate problem appeared after 1.0.6: selecting Resume for a Franchise save could show a connection error and then prevent loading any mode. Frontier’s Hotfix 1.0.7 announcement says the saves have not been lost and explicitly says do not delete your saves folder. It says the hotfix is available on Steam; this source alone does not establish its availability on every console.
- Check your installed version and platform. If Steam offers 1.0.7, check that it is installed before repeating the Resume path. Keep the last usable save; do not delete the saves folder as a connection-error remedy.
- If you have 1.0.6 and cannot obtain 1.0.7: Frontier’s stated workaround is to restart the game and enter the chosen mode using its main-menu mode button, not Resume. This is the developer’s workaround for that specific symptom, not a tested recovery procedure on this site.
- If the symptom persists: record the build, platform, selected mode, exact message and whether it began at Resume or at an animal release. For continuing Franchise connection issues, Frontier also asks players to ensure a VPN is not running. Do not change animal group requirements to explain a connection failure.
- Separate a crash from a restriction. If the game stays open and displays an animal or group requirement, use the eligibility checks below. If releasing still crashes on the updated build, stop repeated attempts and preserve the save and report details for support.
The earlier Planet Hub autosave warning was advice attached to the October 20 investigation notice, not evidence that the current build still has every earlier issue. Manual saving remains a precaution; neither the patch notes nor this guide guarantee recovery of a damaged save. No current-client reproduction has been performed here.
Find the reserve in your current mode
Frontier’s Managing a Zoo announcement says Planet Hub lets you view and visit zoo and reserve locations while playing Career, Franchise or Sandbox. It manages trading, storage and research across locations within the current game mode. That does not confirm transfers between modes, saves or platforms.
Before following anyone else’s steps, record the mode, current zoo, selected reserve, platform and game build. Career objectives, Franchise progression and Sandbox settings may present different conditions; this guide has not tested their exact menus or bypasses.
Can every animal be released into a reserve?
No: the species must have an appropriate Wildlife Reserve. Frontier’s official FAQ makes this species-and-destination condition explicit. Being in the animal roster, healthy in a zoo, or visible in storage does not by itself prove eligibility for your selected reserve. Read the destination’s listed species and group conditions before trying to fix an individual animal.
The official Animals guide explains shared zoo storage and zoo-to-zoo transport, but does not provide a universal reserve release-group recipe. Do not turn its trading rules for healthy adult animals into an unsupported reserve rule.
Two checks before calling a release blocked
1. Can this animal be sent from the zoo?
Frontier says conservation projects and requirements govern release. Check the selected animal’s welfare and any displayed research or conservation condition. A species being in our animals database only confirms a dated roster record, not that every individual is ready or every destination accepts it. Copy the full on-screen message instead of guessing a minimum age, welfare percentage or research level.
2. Does the destination accept this release group?
Open the selected reserve and read each group or ecosystem requirement shown there. Record the destination, group, species and any checked or crossed-out conditions. In an October 15 player discussion, one player said a Franchise zoo allowed the release action but the reserve then rejected the group; replies disagreed over which predator condition was missing. This is a useful example of why both screens matter, not a verified rule about Nile monitors, predator order or a confirmed bug.
A separate red deer question reports that animals were absent from the reserve’s storage list. Replies asked how those animals were obtained, but no official rule was established in that exchange. Keep an absent storage entry separate from a visible but rejected release group; they are different symptoms and should not share an invented fix.
If the animal is absent from storage
Check the zoo-side storage state before diagnosing a rejected reserve group. Frontier’s Animals guide says Animal Storage is accessed through Animal Trading. Select the animal and use Send animal to Storage in Trade Centre at the base of its Info Panel, or use Move and choose the Animal Trading Centre. Then confirm the individual appears in Storage. The guide says animal moves require a Trade Centre connected to the main path network, and storage capacity grows with Accreditation Tier.
Those are documented zoo/storage checks, not proof that a reserve must accept the animal afterward. For the destination, still record the selected reserve and every eligibility condition it shows. The red deer thread does not establish a universal rule based on where an animal was acquired.
A careful release-group check
- Preserve the current save and compare the zoo-side animal action with the selected reserve’s requirement screen.
- Change one relevant condition at a time. Do not reduce animal welfare to test a theory; distinguish an absent animal from one that is visible but unavailable.
- Use the report template below to keep one reproducible attempt together. Check the official patch notes before describing a failure as a confirmed bug.
This is a recording method, not a tested release recipe or promised fix. Exact group thresholds, predator dependencies and rewards remain unverified here.
What the reserve loop is confirmed to include
Frontier confirms customizable natural environments, conservation projects, animal release after requirements, observation and research. Its written Wildlife Reserves & Research Vehicle announcement also introduces a vehicle to drive around reserves. The written material does not establish that driving is required for every project or supply the current controls, costs or research speed.
Frontier describes minimal staff presence in reserves. That does not mean zero staff, a fixed staffing ratio or a guaranteed economy advantage. Seasons and weather are part of the broader game, but their exact effect on a particular release group is not established by the sources used here.
