Wildlife Reserves extend Planet Zoo 2 beyond the zoo itself. Frontier describes them as customizable natural homes that players can design, rewild, observe, research and manage with a minimal staff presence.
Animals are not simply sent away through a menu. Players complete conservation projects and specific requirements before releasing eligible animals into connected living ecosystems.
The confirmed zoo-to-reserve loop
- Build and manage connected zoos.
- Raise animals and meet their needs.
- Conduct research and conservation projects.
- Meet the requirements for an animal release.
- Release the animal into a customizable Wildlife Reserve.
- Observe and manage the reserve as part of the wider network.
- Use conservation progress to improve the connected zoos and habitats.
Frontier calls this an international network for conservation. It links zoos and reserves rather than treating release as the end of an animal’s visible lifecycle.
What is confirmed and what is not
| Question | Current status |
|---|---|
| Can players customize reserves? | Confirmed |
| Can players rewild and observe them? | Confirmed |
| Do reserves include research and conservation projects? | Confirmed |
| Does animal release have requirements? | Confirmed |
| Are zoos and reserves interconnected? | Confirmed |
| Do reserves use fewer staff than zoos? | Minimal staff presence is confirmed |
| Which animals can enter each reserve? | Not fully published |
| What are the exact release thresholds? | Not published |
| How many staff members are required? | Not published |
| Can every aquatic or flying animal use a reserve? | Not confirmed |
This boundary matters because community discussions often turn reserve locations into animal-roster predictions. A real-world species fitting a biome does not confirm that it will appear in the game or be eligible for that reserve.
Which modes include Wildlife Reserves?
Frontier’s current descriptions connect reserves to:
- Career: manage zoos and Wildlife Reserves during the Fauna and Ecosystems Network expedition.
- Franchise: build a global wildlife network with shared progression and research.
- Sandbox: official copy confirms Sandbox as the unrestricted creative mode, but exact reserve options still need verification.
The game also introduces changing seasons, weather conditions and longer in-game years across zoos and reserves.
How to prepare without inventing mechanics
Before release, a useful reserve plan can define goals rather than fake values:
- choose a habitat concept and the species group it is meant to support;
- reserve space for staff access while keeping infrastructure visually restrained;
- separate observation routes from core animal areas;
- plan water, shelter and terrain zones;
- identify which claims require official eligibility data;
- keep a change log as Frontier reveals more reserve locations and rules.
Do not publish a “complete eligible animal list” until the game or official data provides one.
What we will test at launch
Our reserve verification will record:
- unlock conditions by mode;
- available reserve locations and biome rules;
- exact conservation-project steps;
- species eligibility;
- release thresholds and failure messages;
- staff roles and minimum coverage;
- research progression shared with zoos;
- economy effects;
- animal observation and management controls;
- weather, season and performance behavior.
Every result will include the game build, platform and date.
